Advanced championship sponsor Moira Kelly surrounded by suspiciously moustached riders – Dave McKinnon on the left, me on the right

I always suspected it, but I can now confirm that men with moustaches score higher. On the weekend, despite sporting aerodynamically unsound facial hair, members of our Riders for Mo’s Movember fundraising team took out several wins and a championship at the Dressage NSW Clarendon Winter Festival (which was postponed from when it actually was winter).

There were no hairy moments at all (apart from on my upper lip) with my advanced horse, Sky Diamond (Beanz). It’s only his second show at this level and I was super happy with him. He handled everything in the test like a veteran, won his tests with 71.643% and 74.276%, and was named Advanced Champion. Cass and Michele Sangrioli have a great horse here and I’m absolutely thrilled to be riding him.

David McKinnon always performs well, and now he is sporting some very stylish manscaping, he seems set on mowing down the competition.

David took out the Advanced Reserve Championship on Mark Dowling’s Woodside Lady Loxley, and said the judges are loving his new look.

“I think the mo is getting me an extra 2 to 3 percent across the board. If this keeps going, I might find it hard to go back to the old me,” he said.

To top the weekend off, Advanced Championship sponsor Moira Kelly, who always goes above-and-beyond in her support for Dressage in Australia, made a very generous donation to the Riders for Mo’s fundraising efforts, boosting our attempt to reach a target of $10,000 through Movember. Thank you, Moira!

While the ‘staches are a bit of a giggle, in fact the reason we’re willing to be the laughing stock of the arena is because we’re serious about men’s health. Too many men are dying before their time, so Riders for Mo’s are raising funds for the prevention of prostate and testicular cancer, mental health and suicide.

Rider’s for Mo’s is a team made up of dressage riders David Shoobridge, David McKinnon, Elliot Paterson, Gordon Pratt and myself. If you’d like to donate, please do so here.
